Your ticket’s bought. Your bags are packed. And then it occurs to you… You’re going to have to mingle with a bunch of strangers. Pause for panic.
As a company that thrives on events and connecting alike professionals, we at HCM also considers it our duty to prepare attendees for all times of the event, including those less regulated breaks – aka Networking.
Networking at an event where you know no one can be scary. This can be especially true for someone who identifies more as an introvert. It’s easy enough to read the latest tips, tricks, and shticks for initiating conversation with strangers, but that’s a lot to take in.
Among all the advice out there, constants remain.
1. Break The Ice
People love (I repeat, love) to talk about themselves. Ask questions. But don’t just ask a question for the sake of small talk; ask a question with genuine interest. And if you happen to cheat ahead of time by doing a little homework on your fellow attendees, well played. Be yourself and be engaged!
To put this in perspective – Do you like when a server approaches your table at a restaurant with a big, phony smile, schmoozing you for that fatter tip? Of course not. It’s likely you prefer the server who seems happy to interact with you. Apply in networking.
2. Engage
Be the Tom to Dick and Harry. Meaning? If Dick and Harry are having an engaged conversation, it’s safe to join.
Either 1. They came together and are looking for new people to interact with just like you.
Or 2. Dick is so tired of talking to Harry, he’s relieved you’ve interrupted. You, Tom, are welcome.
3. Stand Out
Squeaky wheel it. Make an impression. Be memorable. There are countless ways to make sure you aren’t forgotten:
- Dress to Impress
Represent yourself right. Represent your organization right! Ask yourself, “Do I want to be remembered like this?”
- Leave a Business Card
This one should be a given, but believe it or not, it’s often overlooked.
- Follow Up Post-Event
- Make connections on LinkedIn
- Send a nice, brief email
- Schedule a lunch to discuss further
